Timau National Observatory: World’s Largest Telescope to be Completed in 2023

Jakarta

Development Timau National Observatory will be completed in 2023. When it officially operates, the Timau National Observatory will be included in the list the world’s largest telescope.

National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed that the observatory which is located at the foot of Mount Timau, East Nusa Tenggara, will have specifications that support the field of Indonesian astronomy.

Timau National Observatory specifications

It has an optical telescope with an aperture diameter of 3.8 meters. This will make it into the list of the world’s largest telescopes. This telescope weighs 20 tons. The ‘spider’ structure supports the secondary mirror. The primary mirror is a hyperbola which consists of 18 petal-shaped segments. An active optical system supports each mirror segment and ensures that the primary mirror remains in a perfectly hyperbolic shape. The secondary mirror in the form of a hyperbola with a diameter of one meter can move with 5 degrees of freedom. The tertiary mirror to direct the beam to the focal point of Nasymyth. key to the movement of the telescope in the direction of altitude. The basic structure is a ring that supports the telescope on a concrete pillar. Timau National Observatory Photo: Doc. BRIN

BRIN revealed that currently a secondary mirror has been installed at an observatory owned by Indonesia after Bosscha.

After that, BRIN will install primary and tertiary mirrors as well Obnas Timau the. Meanwhile, the main instrument in the form of a telescope with a diameter of 3.8 meters and a dome with a diameter of 14 meters have been built around 55%.

With this progress, BRIN targets the space monitoring facility to be completed in 2023.

“Obsnas Timau is intended as a national facility that accommodates advanced space research and besides that it also plays a role in cross-disciplinary scientific development and various other related activities,” said the Coordinator of the Kupang National Observatory Station, BRIN, Abdul Rahman.
