Timanfaya National Park celebrates its 50th anniversary with a program of activities to “activate curiosity” about this natural space

The Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote is beginning its fiftieth anniversary with a programme of activities focused, according to its management, on “activating curiosity, sensitivity and respect for this natural space”, and with a detailed programme that will be announced later.

Pascual Gil Muñoz, director of the Timanfaya National Park since September 2020, described it as “a legacy, the heritage of the volcano’s culture, a set of knowledge and resilience that the population demonstrated two centuries ago, facing the eruptions and adapting to their consequences” during the presentation of this program of activities this Friday at the facilities of the protected area.

On September 27, the Department of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands will present the detailed program of talks, exhibitions and meetings at an institutional inauguration that will be attended by authorities from the island, regional and national levels.

The first of the exhibitions of this 50th anniversary will open to the public starting this Saturday, August 10, with a screening of Guardians of Timanfayaa tribute to all the park workers (guides, drivers, guards, educators, maintenance staff, etc.) who with “respect, enthusiasm and admiration” have managed to preserve the values of the Timanfaya National Park.

The talks will be attended by a large part of the scientific community linked to the park, which has been carrying out monitoring work for three decades.

Among other topics (geology, energy, public use, invasive species, ethnography) these public roundtables will address some of the threats facing the Timanfaya National Park, such as “the massive influx of tourists.”
