“Don’t look at my balance”: Mälzer on his luxury
Tim Mälzer apparently has no overview of his finances. The TV chef paid the rent on his apartment in New York for a year and a half without even realizing it. “My definition of luxury is being able to pay my bills,” he said on the SWR Youtube Show “Die Pierre M. Krause Show“.
“I paid rent for a year and a half and I didn’t know that I had rented the thing,” said Mälzer. He had spent a lot of money on architects and lawyers for his restaurant project in New York, then the rented apartment fell under the table. The show host Pierre Krause asked the cook: “You don’t check your account balance that often?”, To which he replied: “Consistently not at all. Why? If it sucks, someone will let me know”.
Tim Mälzer says he is not a good businessman
Mälzer never completed the project in the USA because the running costs were too high and threatened his existence. “I was scared“he admits, but at least he can’t blame himself for not having tried it.
When asked if he was a good businessman, the 50-year-old replied with a resounding “no” and added: “I am very fortunate that I can just do things and earn money in the process“But money is by no means everything in his life, he says.
Tim Mälzer is considered to be very wealthy compared to other chefs
Once a year he sat down with his family and asked: “What are the real needs?“That is obviously noticeable, because the chef does not live in extravagant luxury according to his own statements.” Four-room apartment, a car, manageable vacation. My definition of luxury is being able to pay my bills“, said is.
The restaurant owner, talk show guest and TV host does a lot for this. He is “a player who tries to implement all his ideas,” said Mälzer. It is therefore clear that he describes himself as “very wealthy” when measured against the standard of his “world of cooking”.
