Pokémon is a saga that has just turned 25 years since the first release of its videogame. For those born at the end of the 20th century, it is already part of childhood and is a product that has been established until today.
This time the platform on which Pokémon has gone viral is TikTok, where they are shared videos. The trend started in late May and June is when it has received the most aftershocks. As often happens in this social network, an original idea has been copied several times, recreating the context and using the same music.
The trend consists of the user interpreting a trainer Pokémon of a particular type. It is not about embodying mythical trainers of the game, but about reproducing the attitude that a Pokémon gym leader would have, with his usual movement and his most characteristic phrases.
Gym leaders use puns that have to do with the type of Pokémon they specialize in. Some examples are: “This battle is on fire”, for a Fire-type trainer; “That’s the spirit”, for a Ghost type; “I’ll break the ice”, for an Ice type; or “You will not be able to plant roots here”, for a Plant type.
This trend has started at a time of some discomfort for the community of Pokémon players, as it is still waiting for the long-awaited remake of Sinnoh that a priori does not seem very convincing and so they made it known in the comments of the TikTok clips.
