TikTok STEM, how the new section dedicated to science and mathematics works (also in Italy).

Is TikTok just dancing, lip-sync and kid content? Nope: This has not been the case for some time, as those who regularly use the platform know, and will be even less so in the months to come. Even in Europe, given that the company has decided to bring to us an interesting innovation that has so far been reserved for the United States.

This is the section STEM (the acronym stands for science, technology, engineering, mathematics and is used to include scientific-technological disciplines), which supports the well-known feeds Followed e For you and groups together exclusively informative and educational contents. A feed designed for under 18s (but open to everyone)

According to what was explained, the new feed is now active in the UK and Ireland and will gradually expand to other European countries: in Italy it is expected by the end of April. It will include videos initially made in English, with automatically translated subtitles and which will be “verified by independent organisations”, but the idea is to also welcome content from the many Italian creators (including Quantum Girl, the young scientist recently met by President Mattarella) who use TikTok to disseminate.

From what we understand, the section STEM will start to appear automatically together with the feeds For you e Followed for users under 18, but may possibly be hidden by Settingsin the same way as the users over the age of 18 instead they will be able to make it visible to them.

From TikTok they pointed out that since the feed STEM was made accessible in the United States in 2023, a third of users have activated it and a third of teenagers browse it regularly every week. In the same time frame, the app recorded a 24% growth in content relating to scientific disciplines in the USA and for the last 3 years this content has been used to publish almost 15 million videos globally.

In Milan there is Batman: TikTok loves him, but for the city it is not good news

TikTok STEM, why and why now

As mentioned, it has been some time since TikTok broke away from what it was and has become something else: it remains a social network dedicated mainly to entertainment and light-heartedness, even on delicate topics, but it’s no longer Musically. The app is full of profiles of large or small newspapers or information sites, of individual journalists, of creators who disseminate physics, mathematics, biology, economics, literature, history and so on. AND phenomena come BookTok o ImparaconTikTok I’m there to prove it.

The decision to create the feed STEM and then to also bring it to Europe goes in this direction and was certainly taken some time ago, but the fact of doing it right now, at this very moment, also has an indisputable strategic value. Among the accusations that both the EU and the United States direct at the social network of Eastern origin there is also the fact of not sufficiently protecting the privacy and personal data of minors and of “conditioning the minds of our young people with propaganda” and with “harmful and dangerous content”. If the first objection should be answered by the openings of dedicated data centers in the USA and Europe (like this)what better response to the second than the development of areas within the app dedicated exclusively to learning?

After all, just the feed STEMa kind of school classroom 2.0 ma with the language and times of Gen Z, was cited by the CEO of TikTok, Shou Chew, as an example of content quality, in two hearings before the American Congress, in March 2023 and then again in January 2024. It will be enough, to convince regulators on that and this side of the ocean?
