The app, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, saw its popularity increase significantly during the pandemic. Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram and Messenger round out the top five — those four apps are all owned by the US social network.

TikTok went through a difficult period in 2019, after then-US President Donald Trump tried to ban the app. According to the former president, users were spied on at Beijing’s request. However, Trump’s statements failed to stop the app’s growth.

TikTok itself says it has 700 million monthly users worldwide. However, the reach of Facebook and its various apps is still much wider: more than 3.5 billion people use one of those four apps at least once a month.
