Apple’s first trendy gadget is making a comeback. The second generation iPod shuffle, launched a little over 15 years ago, is indeed experiencing an unexpected resurgence in popularity on TikTok. IPod shuffles, apart from the very first model, all had built-in clips and were available in a wide variety of colors, making them easy to wear.
Teen social network TikTok is known for its incredible ability to kick start or reignite trends like this.
An iPod shuffle yes, but not as you imagine
As noted The Information, iPod shuffle is not the only one currently experiencing such a resurgence in popularity. Other retro gadgets are also making a comeback, driven by millennials. We can cite for example the return of the ethernet cable or flip phones. Each time, their use is diverted to create a buzz.
A few weeks ago, TikTokers started sharing videos where they wore iPod shuffle like a hair clip. They use them both as stand-alone fashion accessories and as music players with wired headphones. These are also making a comeback, which we talked about last November. A quick search on TikTok yields tons of results showing users hijacking the famous iPod shuffle. The first video published on the social network by @sailorkiki has been viewed over 2 million times and received nearly 350,000 likes. But the hair clip trend isn’t the only one that is increasing the popularity of iPod shuffle.
Indeed, millennials on TikTok also share funny iPod shuffle clips, pretending not to know what it’s like. @freckenbats. These jokes have apparently sparked the interest of older TikTokers, highlighting a generational divide with younger teens, as was the case a few years ago with cassettes or music players for example. Apple’s first portable products are no exception.
For the record, Apple withdrew the iPod shuffle from the market in 2017, only 5 years ago. But the iPod shuffle model that mostly seems to go around the world is the second generation. The pastel colors of September 2007 seem to be the most popular at the moment, with the brighter tones of early 2007 and late 2008 being relegated to the background.
