TikTok Introduces STEM Content in European Market Amid Increased Scrutiny and Regulation

As the social network TikTok faces increasing scrutiny and regulation in both the US and the UK, it has announced the gradual entry of engineering, or STEM, content into the European market.

The first pilot countries are England and Ireland. The special STEM section will automatically be recommended to all minor users, or those who have not yet reached the age of 18. For everyone else, it’s possible to turn it on and add it to your recommendations and for easier access in the app’s settings.

The content is in English and is accompanied by automatically generated subtitles. More than 15 million engineering-related videos have been created on the TikTok platform in the past three years. Affiliate partners Common Sense Networks and Poynter ensure content relevance and accuracy. The information must be related to the specific field and the facts must be accurate, otherwise it will not be recognized as STEM content.

In February, the European Union launched a review of TikTok to see if its operation complies with the Digital Markets Act in relation to the safety of users, without causing addiction and difficulty leaving the app. With the introduction of new content, TikTok aims to improve its image by educating both children and adults through short video content.
