The popular Tiktok app has long been a thorn in the side of former US President Donald Trump. Italy took measures against the app after the death of a ten-year-old girl as a result of a challenge. And then there are numerous privacy concerns of minors and the commercialization of their data. No, Tiktok has not run a smooth PR course in the past year. In an effort to iron out the folds, Bytedance, the company behind the app, is publishing a first transparency report. The report is data for the first quarter of this year.
The data shows that more than 11 million accounts have already been deleted this year. More than 71 million fake accounts were intercepted. Tiktok also states that 7,263,952 profiles were removed because the users are under 13 years old. The company wants to assuage the concerns about young users. Tiktok is very popular with young children, but officially there is an age limit of 13 years. Previously, live broadcasts and chat functionalities were restricted for users up to the age of 16.
Removed for ‘danger to minors’
Nearly 62 million videos were removed for failing to adhere to the platform’s community guidelines or terms of service. That’s less than 1 percent of the total number of videos. 82 percent of the removed clips were noticed before they were shown to users, the company reports in the press release.
The majority of videos (36.8 percent) were removed because they posed a ‘danger to minors’. 21 percent showed ‘illegal activity or true’ and 15.6 percent of the removed clips showed nude or sexual activity. 8 percent involved violent content and another 8 percent involved bullying or intimidation.
