Featured alongside the “For You” and “Following” tabs, the STEM feed will provide users with content on topics related to science, technology, engineering and math.
TikTok users in the US will soon see a new feed in the app. The social network has announcement Tuesday the arrival of the STEM tab, “a new viewing experience that will provide our community with a dedicated space to explore a wide range of inspiring, entertaining and enriching videos related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics”. It will appear alongside the two existing feeds, “For You” and “Followings”.
TikTok says these educational communities are already thriving on its app, with STEM-related hashtags receiving more than 110 billion views to date. “We designed the STEM stream to serve as a destination for those looking to delve deeper into these rewarding topics”, said the social network. It could, for example, help a new developer learn to code or encourage scientists to carry out experiments, depending on the platform.
Provide high quality videos
Not all STEM-related content will land in this new tab. The videos will indeed be verified by TikTok partner nonprofit organizations. The first, Common Sense Networks, will ensure that they are appropriate for the stream while the second, Poynter, will assess the reliability of the information presented in them. “If the content does not pass both checkpoints, it will not be eligible for the STEM stream”, warns the social network. It thus intends to offer high quality content to users.
The addition of this new tab is an extension of testing similar thematic feeds in certain markets. With this experimentation, TikTok allows users to explore videos in various categories such as games, food, fashion, and sports.
