TikTok brings group chats and stickers to DMs

DMs are gaining more weight on TikTok: Users can now create group chats with up to 32 people and use stickers.

Messaging is an extremely important area for social media and entertainment apps. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri explained last year that DMs had become more important on the platform than the feed. While Meta, for example, is constantly testing and launching new functions for WhatsApp, other platforms are increasingly relying on more options for immediate communication between users. This is also the case with TikTok: The platform recently introduced streaks linked to messages, reminiscent of Snapchat. Direct messaging, however, was already being pushed in 2023. And also last year, there were indications that TikTok wanted to massively expand the social features surrounding messaging.

Group chats and stickers as DM boost on TikTok

TikTok is set to develop even more into a platform where friends can not only be entertained, but also directly exchange ideas. This also applies to creators and brands. official blog the company writes:

[…] We know our community loves Direct Messages and how easy they make it to share relatable content with friends, discover new videos, and stay on top of the latest trends. To enhance user experience and make connecting with friends even more seamless and enjoyable, we’re excited to introduce new updates that elevate DMs, including the highly requested group chat feature, and give you more control over your messaging experience on the platform.

In the group chat, up to 32 people can view and comment on content together in real time and exchange messages. For safety reasons, the feature is not available for people aged 13 to 15. Teenagers of older age can only be invited to these groups by friends (who follow them and those they follow) and there must be at least one mutual friend in the group. Teenagers must actively choose the group and review and accept new members.

In addition, TikTok is introducing tools for muting and blocking. Individual conversations or the entire chat can also be reported if something occurs that violates the community guidelines. For security and spam prevention reasons, TikTok is also minimizing the number of groups someone can create and the number of forwarding options for a message.

Also new are the stickers that users now integrate into DMs You can create and upload personalized stickers yourself to use them again and again. This is also possible on WhatsApp, for example.
