TikTok becomes a non-Facebook app with 3 billion downloads

TikTok this year recorded 3 billion times the total downloads making it the first non-Facebook app to reach that figure.

Sensor Tower data shows TikTok as application non-Facebook first to reach 3 billion downloads on iOS and Android devices globally. According to the data, TikTok, including the Chinese version of the app Douyin, was the world’s most downloaded and highest paid non-gaming app in the first half of 2021, with its first 383 million installs and a consumer spend of around USD919.2 million.

TikTok’s adoption rate increased in 2021. From the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021, downloads increased by 2%, reaching 177.5 million. Meanwhile, from Q1 2021 to Q2 2021, the increase occurred by 16%, with a total installation of 205.4 million. This is the biggest increase the app has experienced since breaking the start-up record in 2020, with more than 315 million installs.

However, TikTok has also experienced a 38% decline in users in the first half of 2020, almost 619 million. However, this is due to the deletion of the app in the Indian App Store. After that, consumer spending increased 73%.

Overall, the app has been installed more than 3 billion times, making it the fifth non-gaming app to reach this figure. The other four apps with 3 billion installs are WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and Instagram, all of which are owned by Facebook.

In the second quarter of 2021, TikTok’s consumer spending achieved its largest quarter-on-quarter growth, since Q2 2020. This saw an increase in revenue from USD384.7 million to USD534.6 million.

Globally, TikTok’s consumer spending has now surpassed $2.5 billion. Since 2014, only 16 non-gaming apps have generated more than $1 billion in total revenue, and only Tinder, Netflix, YouTube and Tencent Video have earned more than $2.5 billion.
