Tikkie processed around €5.44 billion in payments in 2022, which he says is a record. This year, 130 million payment requests and payments were submitted via ABN Amro’s universal payment app.

On average, the value of an average tikkie increased by more than three euros to 41.84 euros per transaction. Users are very quick to pay requests; of the 130 million tikkies, 89 percent were paid the same day, 63 percent even within the hour and 36 percent within five minutes. Since the introduction of the payment app in 2016, Tikkie has generated over €16.8 billion in payments. Most of that amount has therefore been transferred this year.

According to the payment app, the busiest day was Friday, November 25, when 530,000 tikkies were paid out, significantly more than the average of 350,000 payments per day. “This was not only because many Dutch people received their salary on this day, but also because the orange team played a match against Ecuador during the World Cup. The match heralded the weekend and led to a lot of tikkies extras with descriptions like ‘football’, ‘world cup’ and ‘beer'”.

Tikkie is a free service developed by ABN Amro that allows users to create and share payment requests via WhatsApp, for example. Other users can then transfer money via iDeal to the person who sent the request, regardless of which bank the users are customers of. Meanwhile, many banks have their own Tikkie-like system; the company claims to have more than eight million users.
