Tijuana, new leader of Liga MX; defeats León

Tijuana has left behind the stigma of being a losing team. For at least five seasons, the border team has been in the last places of the Liga MX, paid sporting fines and changed coaches up to 10 times. Benefiting from the disappearance of relegation, the directors announced last May their latest gamble: the hiring of Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio, who led Mexico to the 2018 World Cup in Russia. In just three months, the man obsessed with tactical rotations turned Xolos into the new leader of the tournament, after yesterday’s 2-1 victory in the sixth round against León.

Osorio was out of the country for more than five years. During that time he managed several teams in Colombia, Brazil and Egypt, so his experience attracted the interest of Grupo Caliente, owner of the club. With some additions to the squad, the Xolos became contenders again against rivals who usually fight for the top spots. One of them is the emerald team, which was barely able to fight thanks to a goal by Iván Jared Moreno before halftime (44).

Christian Rivera put the home team ahead (22) and then the expulsion of Luciano Cabral, midfielder of the Fiera, opened the spaces for the 2-1 of Gilberto Mora (65), who at 15 years old became the youngest scorer in the history of the League. The result left those from Tijuana in first place with 14 points while the Esmeraldas stayed with four in 14th place.

San Luis celebrates; Mazatlán and Puebla tie

Hours earlier, at the Alfonso Lastras stadium, Atlético de San Luis defeated Atlas 2-1 in a match full of goal opportunities. Brazilian Vitinho (30) and Frenchman Sébastien Salles-Lamonge (53) sealed the score, despite the red-and-black reaction led by José Rivaldo Lozano, who brought the red-and-blacks closer in the final stretch (70).

Finally, Mazatlán and Puebla negotiated a 1-1 draw without pain or glory. The Camoteros, who were left with one less man after the expulsion of Sebastián Olmedo, rescued the point through a goal by Diego de Buen (35). Luis Gustavo Sánchez scored the goal for the Cañoneros (5).

In the Women’s League, the Xolas beat Santos 1-0 thanks to Guatemalan Aisha Keshy Solórzano (10), the only scorer of the afternoon.
