Tigres, eliminated from the Concachampions; falls on penalties against the Columbus Crew

Tigres was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions League. He had to win so as not to depend on any extra effort from his players, but he suffered more than necessary and ended up eliminated.

The resistance of the Columbus Crew, current MLS champion, had a lot to do with the match extending to extra time and penalties after the 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes (2-2 overall). At the Universitario stadium, the Americans won 4-3 after errors by André-Pierre Gignac and Guido Pizarro.

Gignac opened the scoring in the first play (minute 3) after an error by goalkeeper Patrick Shulte. With aplomb, Columbus modified its strategy in time when attacking, achieved the tie thanks to Diego Rossi’s goal (59) and did not concede space again. Marcelo Flores was injured.

Already in extra time, goalkeeper Carlos Felipe Rodríguez prevented a bad clearance by Diego Reyes from leading to an own goal that would end the tie.

According to the specialized site Transfermarkt, the cats’ squad is valued at 69.3 million dollars, almost 18 million more than that of the Columbus Crew.

That difference, however, was aside from what happened on the field. Because on penalties and with the absence of the injured goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán, the MLS team converted four of their five shots and claimed their place as semifinalists of the Concachampions.
