Golf superstar, 15-time Grand Slam winner Tiger Woods, joined NBA icons Michael Jordan and LeBron James among sportsmen entering the billionaire club, according to Forbes magazine on Friday (June 10). Aged 46, Tiger Woods, who made a spectacular return to competition in the spring after the serious car accident that almost cost him his right leg in February 2021, won, during his 27-year career, approximately 1.7 billion dollars (nearly 1.6 billion euros) from his earnings, but above all from his numerous advertising contracts and other investments outside the greens, representing more than 90% of his income.
According to Forbes, he is the richest sportsman on the planet, ahead of LeBron James, the first active NBA basketball player who became a billionaire this year, and Michael Jordan, who became one after stopping his career, like the late Kobe Bryant. Tiger Woods, who will not participate in the US Open next week, plans to play the British Open in St. Andrews (Scotland) in July.
Greg Norman, commissioner of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational, recently said Woods received a nine-figure offer to join the breakout PGA League. But the “Tiger” said he preferred to continue to pledge allegiance to the North American circuit, like other legends of the little white ball, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus before him. In this very exclusive club of billionaire athletes there are also boxer Floyd Mayweather, footballers Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and tennis player Roger Federer, all of whom became billionaires during their sports careers.
