Tiger Woods (USA) will participate with his son Charlie in the PNC Championship (total prize money of $1.085 million), which opens in Orlando, Florida, USA on the 16th (local time).
The PNC Championship is an event on the PGA Champions Tour where players who have won major tournaments compete in groups with their families to compete.
On the 15th, a day before the opening of the tournament, Woods introduced his son Charlie’s current status through the tournament organizing committee. Woods first explained, “I grew almost 10cm taller this year,” and “As I grew quickly, there were changes in my swing and club.”
Charlie appeared much taller than a year ago during the practice round on this day, to the point that there was not much difference compared to his father, who is 185cm tall. Woods, who had his first daughter, Sam, in 2007, became the father of two children with the birth of his son, Charlie, in 2009.
Woods, who also serves as a caddy for his son’s junior competition, praised him, saying, “My swing speed has become faster and my understanding of how to hit a shot has improved,” and added, “Like any other teenager, there will be growing pains and suffering.”
He added, “I don’t like the idea of always looking at your phone,” and added, “I tell them to put their phone down and look around.”
“I think a lot of parents probably hate that their kids are always looking down,” Woods added. However, Woods said, “As a parent, I provide the basics, but I try to allow my son to have his own space as much as possible,” and added, “I hear a lot of things from people around me, and my role is to protect my child from those things.”
When asked to compare the Charlie he is now with when he was young, Woods said, “When I was that age, I lacked speed, and the difference was so great that it was difficult to compare equipment such as golf balls.” However, there were many things I learned during my career as a player. “I can share feelings and hand sensations with my son,” he said.
Because the age of participants in this competition is so diverse, the tee shot is divided into four locations. Professional players like Woods play from the longer gold tees, and his son Charlie plays from the shorter white tees.
Regarding this, Woods predicted, “My son hits farther than me, so there will be an advantage in playing on a shorter course.”
Woods, who did not use a cart during today’s practice round, said, “Walking helps with the condition of my back,” and added, “This is my second competition in three weeks, and my feeling is getting better.”
Woods, who made his comeback about eight months after the Masters in April of this year through the Hero World Challenge earlier this month, pledged to do well in this tournament, saying, “Even though it was very windy today, my shots were good overall.”
