Tiger Woods is no longer under contract with Nike after 27 years. The golf star’s separation from the largest sports brand is reminiscent of a move by Roger Federer. Woods could now do that too. There are signs.
Tiger Woods was just 20 years old when Nike gave the budding superstar what was then golf’s largest sponsorship deal. “The world has never seen anything like what he will do for the sport. It’s art. “I wasn’t alive to see Claude Monet paint, but I’m alive to see Tiger play, and that’s great,” Nike founder Phil Knight said at the time, explaining the decision to award the golfer $40 million over the next five years years to pay. It was an investment that was supposed to be worthwhile for both sides, became even more lavish and is now ending after 27 years.
“I was lucky enough to start a partnership with one of the most recognized brands in the world. The days since have been filled with so many amazing moments and memories that I could go on forever if I listed them off,” Woods wrote on his social media about the breakup. He also posted a photo of himself, his mother Kultida Woods and Nike founder Knight.

With the Swoosh on his clothing, Woods became one of the greatest golfers in sports history. So far in his career he has won 15 major tournaments and was at the top of the world rankings for more than 13 years. Woods became a global icon and Nike also grew rapidly alongside him. The supplier’s golf department had sales of around $30 million before Wood’s signing, but just two years later it was ten times that amount.
Nike stuck with Woods even in difficult times
It’s logical that Nike tied its star for the long term. Affairs, an arrest for driving under the influence, injury concerns and his serious car accident in spring 2021 – Nike stuck by Woods even in difficult times. The American made the comeback and finally celebrated his last major victory to date in 2019. To date, Woods has received more than $500 million from Oregon. The 48-year-old is one of an illustrious circle of athletes who earned more than a billion dollars during their active careers. These include Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Federer and LeBron James.

Woods’ contract with Nike expires in 2023. The outfitter also released a statement: “Over the course of our partnership, we, along with the rest of the world, have witnessed how Tiger has not only redefined golf, but also broken boundaries for the entire sport.”

Nike had already stopped producing golf equipment such as clubs and balls in 2016. Woods only wore clothes with the famous Swoosh logo. Golf brand TaylorMade provides Wood’s clubs, he plays with Bridgestone balls and wears FootJoy shoes.
Woods could become a shareholder
Without main supplier Nike, a new chapter begins for Woods. There are no concrete contracts yet, but there is speculation that the golfer will take a similar path to Federer. The tennis legend left Nike in 2018 and shortly afterwards became a shareholder in On. The deal proved extremely lucrative when the Swiss shoe company went public. Federer’s three percent stake is worth about $300 million.

The US brand Greyson could be the counterpart to On in golf. The luxury brand has signed some well-known golf stars in recent years, including Matt Fitzpatrick, Luke Donald and Allison Lee. Greyson also welcomed Wood’s 14-year-old son Charlie to the brand family a few weeks ago. In addition, Wood’s good friend Justin Thomas not only acts as a brand ambassador, but also owns shares in the company. Woods could now follow.
