Over the past month and a half, the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has found tiger mosquitoes at seven companies that import used tires. These are companies in Montfoort, Emmeloord, Lelystad, Almere, Assen, Etten-Leur and Weert. This is evident from data on the NVWA site, according to the platform Stop invasive exotics. All companies concern finds that have been made for several years, sometimes more than 10 years.

The tiger mosquito originates from Asia and can spread more than 20 viral diseases, including dengue fever or dengue, zika and chikungunya. The import of used tires from countries where the tiger mosquito occurs is an important import route. That is why the NVWA has had traps at these companies since 2010. The preventive regulations that the companies must comply with include dry import and dry storage of the tyres. Without water, any eggs present in the tires cannot develop into mosquitoes. Nevertheless, tiger mosquitoes are found almost every year at a number of tire companies.

Tiger mosquitoes have now been found at Kargro in Montfoort for the tenth year. The tiger mosquitoes were found on June 15, 23 and 30, not only on the company premises, but also in the surrounding area.

In Emmeloord, tiger mosquitoes were spotted at Kargo for the ninth year, on 29 June and 7 July.

Tiger mosquitoes were found at Robeo in Lelystad on 7 July. This is the twelfth year that exotic mosquitoes have been found there.

At Gebr. Kraan in Almere, tiger mosquitoes were found on 4 and 17 July. This is the fifth year that tiger mosquitoes have been found there.

At Dikabo in Assen, the NVWA found tiger mosquitoes on 27 June and 6, 13 and 21 July. The health-deceiving exotic mosquitoes were not only found on the company premises, but also in the surrounding area. Yellow fever mosquitoes were also found on the farm on June 27th. This means that exotic mosquitoes have been found at the company for the eleventh consecutive year.

Tiger mosquitoes were found at tire company Vrakking in Etten-Leur on 12 and 20 July. This is the fourth year this has happened.

At Ruband in Weert, the NVWA found a number of tiger mosquitoes on 26 June. This makes 2023 the eleventh year that exotic mosquitoes have been found there.

The NVWA does not mention anything on the website about the numbers of tiger mosquitoes and yellow fever mosquitoes found, which will not be announced until next year.

To force the NVWA to take enforcement action against the companies, the platform has started a lawsuit. The case is currently before the Council of State, the date of the hearing has not yet been set.
