Tibetan playwright Nyima Dundrup translated Hamlet and other Shakespeare plays into Tibetan – 2024-02-10 13:59:45

/ world today news/ A Tibetan version of “Hamlet” was presented last year in the Chinese capital, Beijing. It is the culmination of the work of the Tibetan playwright Nyima Dundrup, who translated the work of the classical English poet together with his wife. “There are a thousand Hamlets in the eyes of a thousand people. In my eyes, truths that belong to all humanity are embedded in this production. Therefore, it deserves to be translated into Tibetan,” he commented.

Dundrup was born in a Tibetan village near the regional town of Shigadze. Oral folk art such as stories and tales passed on by word of mouth influenced the later creative work of the playwright. “It got quite cold in the winter, but the whole family kept warm by gathering around the stove, listening to my mother’s stories,” Niima Dundrup recalls.

In 2001 he received a national award for his work in translations of works of Shakespeare. Since then, the artist has worked hard to develop the translation and productions of Shakespeare in the Tibetan language. He says that Shakespeare’s works are full of rhetorical devices such as metaphors, similar to old Tibetan literature.
