Princess Margriet and Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven was in New York this weekend for a party full of splendor.
After attending a symposium on Nov. 17, the couple attended the so-called NAF Ball on Friday night, Nov. 18. The NAF (Netherland-America Foundation) develops numerous cultural, scientific and educational activities with the aim of promoting Dutch-American friendship. Proceeds from the NAF Ball are used for scholarships and other exchange programs in the fields of education, science and culture. Princess Margriet and Mr Van Vollenhoven are the patrons of the initiative.
Large photo galleries of the ball are usually displayed, but these will not be available this year. Fortunately, Hans Jacobs of Royalblog was also present. He took the photo below, which also features Prince Floris and Princess Aimée.
Princess Margriet’s dress is made of silk chiffon and a rebrode lace bodice. You can guess the designer: Addy van den Krommenacker. The designer of Aimée’s dress is still being sought.

During the annual ball, the princess invariably wears a tiara. This time she chose the Greek laurel wreath. There are two theories about the origin of this jewel. 1: The diadem would come from the estate of Princess Louise, her sister of King William I. After her childless death in 1819, this jewel would pass to the House of Orange-Nassau. 2: The most plausible theory is that Juliana and Bernhard bought the historic tiara in the 1950s from a jeweler in The Hague for Princess Beatrice.
