Tianwen-1, The Existence of China’s Ambition to the Red Planet

Jakarta

China is ambitious about catching up with the United States in its space mission to Planet Mars. After traveling for 7 months, Tianwen-1 finally managed to reach the orbit of the Red Planet.

The competition for space exploration technology has peaked. Competing with the United States and the United Arab Emirates, China is carrying out an expedition to Mars with a spacecraft named Tianwen-1. Tianwen-1 managed to reach the orbit of Planet Mars on 11 February.

As a form of space domination race, China is not half-hearted. Tianwen-1, which consists of a robot orbiter, rover, lander, and deployable camera, is not just passing through orbit, but will land directly on the surface of Mars.

Launching Space.com, Sunday (21/3/2021) estimated landings will be made in the next few months in an area called Utopia Planitia, a major Utopia Planitia collision basin, south of NASA’s Viking 2 landing site. The Chinese space agency said Tianwen-1 had entered orbit around Mars at a position of about 280km from the surface Planet Mars.

Currently Tianwen-1 is studying the target landing site, then in May or June 2021 it will carry out the release of the capsule. At this stage, the aircraft is projected to enter the Martian atmosphere followed by a descent phase under the parachute, after which the lander will use its propulsion to land smoothly on Mars.

This expedition aims to validate whether the Red Planet contains life. In addition, starting from the fact that about four billion years ago, the water in the atmosphere of Mars experienced evaporation which made Tianwen-1 also have a mission to find out the cause. This can be detected by collecting underground water data, as well as examining the Martian atmosphere. Furthermore, Tianwen-1 will bring back rock and soil samples from the surface of Mars to Earth.

If successful, this event will carve a new history for China because so far only NASA has successfully landed and operated a spacecraft in Planet Mars.
