Tiago Pinto told in an interview with ‘The Athletic’ how he managed to take José Mourinho to Roma. The Giallorossi’s sporting director, who is leaving the club, explained that it all started with an exchange of messages with Jorge Mendes, the coach’s manager, in a joking tone.
When Tottenham fired the Portuguese coach, just a few days before the English League Cup final, Tiago Pinto sent a message to the businessman, suggesting that Mourinho go to Roma. Jorge Mendes showed the text to the coach, who liked the idea. “I think it took about 14 days between the message and the presentation”, explained Tiago Pinto.
The news took everyone in Italy by surprise, including some market experts. “When I think about the owners of Roma I think about the way we signed Mourinho. We do things quickly, without fuss and by surprise.”
With Mourinho leading the team, Tiago Pinto admits that it has become easier to convince big stars to sign for Roma. “If you asked a Roma fan three years ago if it would be possible to have Dybala, Tammy [Abraham], Lukaku and Mourinho, maybe he would say ‘you’re crazy’. But now it has”, congratulated Tiago Pinto.
