Thyroid Gland Surgery: Conditions and Importance Explained by Surgical Oncology Specialist

Surgical Oncology Specialist, Oncology Division, RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Dr. Dr. Diani Kartini, SpB(K)Onk explained the importance of the thyroid gland for the body and certain conditions when the thyroid gland requires surgery.

“The thyroid gland can require treatment in several conditions, for example an enlarged thyroid gland. “One of them, ordinary people call it ‘goiter’ or enlargement of the thyroid gland,” said Diani during an online talk show attended from Jakarta, Thursday.

The thyroid gland is a gland that is shaped like a butterfly and is located in the neck (there are two). The thyroid gland functions for body metabolism, body growth and development and maintaining heart health.

There are a number of conditions when the thyroid gland requires surgery, for example, enlargement of the thyroid gland, abnormalities in the thyroid gland, and others.

Abnormalities in the thyroid gland include hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone and conversely, hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone.

The conditions above can be accompanied by a number of symptoms, such as hyperthyroidism which makes a person sweat more, heart palpitations, bulging or enlarged eyes, and others. In contrast to hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism usually has symptoms such as feeling weak, having difficulty defecating, and so on.

“On average, patients come to the doctor with complaints of a lump in the neck, however, we have to find out first whether it is really due to an enlarged thyroid gland. “If the lump moves when swallowing, it’s probably because of a problem with the thyroid gland,” said Diani.

Enlargement of the thyroid gland can be an indication of a disease, including hormonal disorders produced by the thyroid gland, autoimmune diseases, tumors, and cancer. The doctor will carry out further examinations to determine the disease.

If a lump on the thyroid gland is indicated as cancer, it is feared that the cancer cells will spread to the lymph nodes or other areas of the body. Therefore, the doctor will further examine the patient using a biopsy method to determine whether the lump is benign or malignant.

If the results of the examination are known, the doctor will take action by surgically removing both thyroid glands (thyroid glands in the right and left lobes), or only removing part of the thyroid gland.

“There are conditions that must be met. “For example, if a patient is in the low risk group, they will only cut (the thyroid gland) on one side,” said Diani.

When the patient is at high risk, the doctor will perform surgery on both lobes of the thyroid gland.

After the process of removing the thyroid gland is complete, the patient must rest, diligently check with the doctor, and take the medication given so that the body’s condition can recover quickly.
