The delicate upswing of the German handball record champion THW Kiel has already come to a halt again. Coach Filip Jicha’s team lost 34:35 (15:16) at SC DHfK Leipzig on Saturday and suffered their fourth defeat in the last five league games.
Viggo Kristjansson scored the most goals with nine goals for Leipzig, who, like in the second half of the previous season, were able to trip up the favorites and thus celebrate their second win of 2023 against Kiel. For the guests, eight goals each from Nikola Bilyk and Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu were not enough to take anything worth counting from Saxony.
Simple goals from Leipzig “hurt twice as much”
“We scored 34 goals, that’s okay. But getting 35 is far too much for our standards,” said Bilyk at Dyn: “At the back, Leipzig always managed to score easy goals. That hurts twice as much.”
After the surprising cup exit against HSG Wetzlar, THW recently celebrated victories in the Bundesliga (HSV Hamburg) and the Champions League (Industria Kielce). Now another setback followed, the defending champions have long since lost touch with the top places with 8:8 points.

For comparison: In the previous season, the Kiel team only had one minus point more after 34 match days than they do now after eight games. Next Thursday (6.45 p.m./Dyn) there will be a reunion with the superstar Sander Sagosen, who left in the summer, in the Champions League with the Norwegian handball champions Kolstad IL. (sid/lsc)
