“The Third Man” on TV: That’s what the thriller is about

Background: Three teams worked in parallel on the film for seven weeks in Vienna in autumn 1948: One part was responsible for shooting at night – the fire brigade had to keep the pavement moist to get a good picture; a second filmed the scenes in the sewer system, a third captured images of the day and Vienna. The Viennese police have a special unit that is only responsible for monitoring the sewer system. The underground passages provide perfect hiding places for criminals and their prey or drugs. Real cops outside of this unit played the cops in the film. The Viennese musician Anton Karas, who recorded the defining zither music for the soundtrack, was discovered by director Graham Greene at a production party. Reed asked Karas to go to his hotel room to record some songs. When Greene later realized that he wanted to use Karas’ music for the entire film, he had the zither player flown to London. Thanks to the fame the film earned him, Karas became a top paid musician. He opened a nightclub in Vienna called “The Third Man”, which he ran until his death. Guy Hamilton, who later directed “James Bond” films, was Greene’s assistant director. Review: “Great craftsmanship with 100 percent entertainment value.” (Daily Mirror) “From the gloomy ambience of a war-torn city (Oscar for the camera!) To the legendary zither music by Anton Karas – everything is right in this classic. Conclusion: exceptional thriller with a dense atmosphere.” (cinema.de) “Overwhelming post-war thriller that delivers unmatched in all areas.” (Blickpunkt: Film) “Carol Reed succeeded, with Orson Welles in a terribly beautiful role, a classic of film noir.” (filmstarts.de) “Exciting and intriguing film. The script, direction and cast (right down to the smallest supporting role) are excellent and convey an in-depth picture of the people of this time.” (Protestant film observer) (Source: Tele 5, transmitted by FUNKE program magazines)
