Thuringia: City council election in Steinbach-Hallenberg was legal – election challenge rejected

Status: 05.09.2024 17:25

According to candidate Thomas Keller, there were several violations during the city council election in Steinbach-Hallenberg (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district). However, the legal supervisory authority was unable to identify any.

The city council election in Steinbach-Hallenberg (Schmalkalden-Meiningen district) was legal. This was the conclusion reached by the Lower Legal Supervisory Authority, as the district office informed MDR THÜRINGEN upon request. The election challenge was rejected as unfounded.

Reasons for the election challenge remained unconfirmed

The complaint was filed by lawyer Thomas Keller in mid-June. Keller had stood as a candidate for the “Haselgrund Voters’ Association” in Steinbach-Hallenberg in the May election, but was left without a mandate after the election. Keller told MDR THÜRINGEN at the time that the challenge to the election has nothing to do with his personal election result.

The city council of Steinbach-Hallenberg has its seat in the town hall.

He had cited alleged violations of the neutrality requirement by Mayor Markus Böttcher (independent) as well as organizational violations of the election regulations as reasons for challenging the election – which, according to the district office, have not been confirmed.
