In Thun, the construction of a new fire brigade and civil defence base is getting closer. Voters have overwhelmingly approved a loan of six million francs for the purchase of a plot of land on Mittlere Strasse/Rütlistrasse.

10,454 voters approved the proposal, only 1,487 rejected it. This corresponds to a yes majority of 87.6 percent, as the city announced on Sunday.

Voter turnout was 39.4 percent. “This completes the search for a new location and we can concentrate on implementing the rescue base,” said municipal councilor Eveline Salzmann (SVP), head of the Security and Social Affairs Directorate, according to the communiqué.

Further procedure

The city will now commission a detailed feasibility study. The city council and voters will later decide on the loan for the new building project. The new building will be located on the outskirts of the city. This will relieve the pressure on the residential area where the base was previously located.
