Thunderstorms Threaten New York Area – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK — Residents of the Tri-State area could experience gusts of thunderstorms in some areas Tuesday afternoon, which could impact overnight travel with downpours, hail and freezing precipitation.

And that does not stop there. Mother Nature is expected to bring a mix of cold rain, sleet, and snow for the next few days. Tuesday morning showers eased shortly after sunrise, but another round of showers is expected late afternoon and early Friday.

That storm line could bring thunder, hail, and graupel (weather talks hail, granules of freezing precipitation), though destructive winds are considered the biggest threat at this point.

The system clears, paving the way for dry, clear, and cold weather through Wednesday morning. The next storm moves in Wednesday afternoon.

That late afternoon system could bring a brief spell of snow, with noticeable flakes possibly even in New York City, which hasn’t gotten any measurable snow this winter, late afternoon and early Wednesday night. Then we have a break, followed by a cold rain for most.

Those primarily north of the New Jersey-New York-Connecticut border should see freezing rain and sleet.

Driving conditions in those areas, which cover places like Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Pike counties, will be less than ideal during early Thursday morning travel. Temperatures rise above freezing from late morning, which will help melt any lingering ice.

We’re seeing cooling temps on Friday, up to around 48 from over 50 on Thursday, and more cooling on Saturday. Frigid temperatures could be in the 20s to kick off the weekend once again, and it will remain windy and chilly throughout the day.

By Sunday, we once again have temperatures above those of the season. We are tracking another storm system that could hit within a week, but right now, it is too difficult to predict how it might affect the tri-state area. For now, expect rain.

The latest weather expectations come after some local points broke records on Thursday. Islip hit 71(!!) degrees in the afternoon, well above the previous high of 59 degrees, set in 2018. Both the New York and Bridgeport, Connecticut airports also set or tied all-time highs.
