Beizer Alessia De Lorenzis (23) looks worried from the Gelateria Intrigo at the raging Aare in Thun BE: The low Bernd is obviously on the march. “In the last three years I have never seen the water stand so high,” she says. «We are afraid that the business will be flooded. If we had to close again, it would be a financial catastrophe for us after Corona. ”

The young manager of the family business says: “Now all you can do is pray!” In addition, she had taped the sockets in case the water got in – but she couldn’t do much more.

Beizer has purchased a water pump
The owner of the Del Padre restaurant on Thuner Mühleplatz is also busy preparing for himself on Monday. The Aare has already found its way to the steps of its terrace: the rubbish bins are already in about ten centimeters of water at noon.

«I bought a water pump and a long hose. In addition, we raised everything that was on the ground, ”reports Flakeron Isaki (25). His employees would have themselves and their rubber boots ready at all times in the event of an emergency. “I am optimistic that we will overcome that.”

“I’m very scared”
Marco Ramseier (40) from the Chillounge coffee bar next door is a little less optimistic. “I’m very scared because I can imagine how bad it can get,” says the managing director. “I think others are not yet aware of how much water we are likely to face.” During the last major flood in 2005, Mühleplatz was about one meter under water, he recalls.
–
The fire brigade wants to prevent that this time. Ramseier and the neighboring Beizer therefore have to clear away the garden furniture on Monday evening. Heinz Wegmüller (59) is the head of the regional management body (RFO) of the city of Thun plus and explains this measure: “We have plastic elements that we can fill with water for flood protection. We will set up this across Mühleplatz in the evening. “

No wonder button in Bern
The installation of the water barriers has been in progress since Friday. However, since the big European Championship final was still being played on the weekend, out of consideration for public life, they waited until the last moment to complete the construction – but now it is high time.
–
Bernhard Schudel (61), Head of the Water Management Department for the Canton of Bern, agrees: “All locks are completely open. We can’t do more. ” It is expected that the situation will worsen over the course of the week – and, according to current forecasts, will lead to an overload of the system for better or worse. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a miracle button in Bern that we can still press.”
