Thuir Youth Council’s Educational Trip to Toulon Impacts Local History Education for 33 Children

At the initiative of the Thuir town hall and the Aspres community of communes with the participation of Souvenir français, 33 children from the Thuir municipal youth council and the community of communes got involved in work on memory.

After a few preliminary meetings and a visit to the Departmental Memory Center in Perpignan, the group was able to discover with great interest the local, national and international history of seniors during the Occupation and the Liberation.

The highlight of the project was a stay in Toulon, accompanied by Régis Porra, head of the youth service, two facilitators, Madeline and Lucas and two elected officials from the town of Thuir, Sabine Raynal and Stéphane Mestres.

Upon their arrival at the beginning of the afternoon in the harbor of Toulon, visit to the naval base provided by four soldiers who listen to the children, and a spectacular anti-aircraft frigate.

The next day, head to Mont-Faron by cable car, the summit where the memorial of the landing and the liberation of Provence stands.

This was the opportunity to take the information obtained in Perpignan and develop it with all the photos, films and period pieces linked to the landing of August 15, 1944 in Provence. The stay ended with an exhilarating and fun visit to the naval base’s firefighters site. A particularly successful memorial trip with tremendous interest from the children who proved to be very curious and eager for knowledge. There is no doubt that this experience will help them become enlightened adults and informed citizens.
