On Wednesday evening, the third division basketball players of the Hanau White Wings had just lost their play-off game in Münster, Sebastian Lübeck went under the computer. For the managing director, it was necessary to run through various scenarios. And there will be a few of them before the final match day of the second group phase on Saturday (May 1, 2021, 7 p.m.).
Hanau – All teams in the field of four can still qualify for the semi-finals. “The tension is the only good thing about the new mode instead of the knockout games,” says Lübeck.
Münster has the best cards (4: 2 points), FC Bayern and VfL Bochum (2: 2 each) are still in the race with good prospects. They would have to win their home game against Munich with a difference of 27 points and at the same time hope for a Bochum defeat against Münster. “The boys will be diligently practicing threesomes,” says Lübeck with a smile, knowing full well that this mortgage will be too high.
Change of rule creates additional tension
Explanation: After a rule change in the game rules, the basket difference between the teams is offset against a three-way comparison. And after the two defeats in Bochum (90: 104) and Münster (75:85), Hanau have some catching up to do. “We want to win the last game and say goodbye to the season with our heads held high as a top 8 team in the league,” said Lübeck. Something else is important to him: “Nobody should be able to tell us that we did not give everything. That is also the way to go in a competition. We will therefore throw everything in again. In Münster we showed again that we can do it. “
In the favorites, the Hanau team, driven by captain Till-Joscha Jönke, demonstrated fighting spirit and morale, could not be shaken off. But the game relentlessly exposed the weak point of the White Wings this season. When fighting for positions under the basket, the necessary centimeters and the final consequence are missing. “Münster got 20 rebounds more than we did. You can’t win a game with such a quota, ”emphasizes coach Kamil Piechucki.
Without the injured Josef Eichler and Michael Acosta, who migrated over the course of the season, the Hanau residents simply lack a classic center that grabs and grabs at the board. “We mostly had a positive rebound relationship and a different presence with the two of them, but it is idle to speculate how the game would have turned out with them,” says Lübeck. “Münster made perfect use of that and also hit hard from the outside.” More than half of the three attempts (13/24) ended up in the basket.
Philip Hecker is available again
With their thin line-up – Philip Hecker was absent due to high school preparation, Malik Kudic was hardly used – the guests stayed within striking distance, but did not manage to turn things around.
In the duel with FC Bayern II, the likely end of the season, Hecker will expand the rotation again. Munich may not be the greatest in terms of length, but they are strong rebounders and inspired by the surprise coup against Bochum. Playmaker Erol Ersek scored 41 points and the winning goal. “Munich is playing at a great pace, we have to find an answer to that,” announced Piechucki. (By Jörn Polzin)
