NEW YORK. In the first period they took a 3-0 lead, in the second they lost everything and ended up 3-4 down – and in the final period they came back and fought their way to a 6-4 victory.

Well, it was really tough for Washington against the New Jersey Devils in Newark last night.

– Above all, we showed good character in the third. Hope we can build on this, says Nicklas Bäckström to Sportbladet.

There have already been quite a few eyebrow-raising games played in the opening weeks of the NHL regular season, but none quite as jaw-dropping as the one between the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals at The Rock.

In the first period, it seemed that the Caps, after all the woes during the opening, could take an easy victory. They dominated a bafflingly pale and sloppy home team and went 3-0 up without too much trouble.

Then, however, a total change of scene followed.

The Devils came out to the second act with their fangs bared and in just over ten minutes had turned to a 4-3 lead, among other things after two new goals by Tyler Toffoli.

That was the end of the event, most witnesses believed.

But no – in the third it turned again. The Caps regained the initiative, equalizing after just eighteen seconds and retaking the lead after just over two minutes.

Then they held out until Alex Ovetchkin could make it 6-4 in an empty net at the end.

– The first was good and in the second we got to see how dangerous the Devils are when you mess with the puck. But we show really good character that comes back in the third, greets Nicklas Bäckström in a text message.

He himself provided the assist for Connor McMichael’s 5-4 goal in the final period and is, of course, relieved to have been involved in snapping a troublesome long losing streak.

– It was a very important victory, we hope we can build on this now, says the 35-year-old from Valbo,

Happiest of all in the Washington camp, however, was probably Hunter Shepard – long-time AHL target who, at the age of 27, made his NHL debut and got to celebrate his first victory at once.

– It doesn’t feel like reality. It hasn’t sunk in yet, he says with a slightly shocked look afterwards.

Jesper Bratt had an assist for the Devils.
