Lennard Kämna tacted, attacked and had the victory so close on the steep ramps of the Puy Mary – but in the end the huge talent rolled over the finish line with his head hanging. Two days after his 24th birthday, Kämna just missed his first stage win in the Tour de France at an altitude of 1589 meters. Kämna took second place behind Daniel Martinez on the 13th stage on Friday after 191.5 kilometers and a total of seven mountain classifications. In the last meters, the Colombian passed the German youngster. Kämna’s team-mate Maximilian Schachmann, who looked like the stage winner for a long time, was a strong third.
Like the day before, all efforts of the German Bora-hansgrohe team were not rewarded. The first German stage win since John Degenkolb 2018 is still a long time coming. Everything went according to plan. Schachmann had prepared the attack and was even in the lead up to 1.6 kilometers from the goal. But Martinez was not fooled.
Roglic shakes off Bernal
When Kämna and Co. had already crossed the finish line, the exchange of blows between the stars was still in full swing on the 5.4 kilometer final climb with an average of 8.1 percent gradient. Top favorite Primoz Roglic defended his yellow jersey and shook off last year’s winner Egan Bernal. His compatriot Tadej Pogacar is now second overall. The French hopefuls Guillaume Martin and Romain Bardet, on the other hand, lost time and may have lost their chances of a tour victory.
Kämna indicates its potential
It is possible that Kämna will also find herself in the contingent group in the next few years. On Friday the youngster again indicated his great potential. The three falls at the beginning of the tour were forgotten and digested. Rather, he built on the strong performance at the Dauphiné tour when he won the stage to Megève.
Then as now, Kämna got free travel. “We don’t have such a real leader anymore, except for Peter (Sagan) for the flat stages,” said Kämna, referring to Emanuel Buchmann, fourth in the overall ranking, and added: “We’ll try to get into the group every day and to fight for the stage win. Everyone gets their chance. ”
Kämna was accompanied in a 17-strong breakaway group by Schachmann, who had already tried it the day before and was sixth. It was also the Berliner who attacked from within the group. The final ascent, which had gradients of eleven and twelve percent over the last two kilometers, was more tailored to Kämna. The North German is a good climber with a height of 1.81 meters and a body weight of only 65 kilograms. In contrast to Buchmann, he also has outstanding time trial qualities. All prerequisites that give hope for more.
Bardet and Quintana fall – Mollema is out
The peloton with all the contenders took it easy until the last two climbs. And yet there were falls again. It also caught the French hope Romain Bardet, who slammed hard on the asphalt in his home country of all places. The two-time tour runner-up Nairo Quintana was also able to continue – in contrast to the Dutchman Bauke Mollema, who had to retire, who had previously placed 13th.
Corona infection numbers cause concern
Meanwhile, the rising number of corona infections – on Thursday there were almost 10,000 new infections in France – continue to cause concern on the tour. So it went through a red zone on Friday. Christian Prudhomme, who tested positive himself and is in quarantine at home, is still confident. “We have been in contact with the health authorities since the start of the tour. We have two scenarios, a stricter one with the reduction of spectators in red zones such as in Nice or Lyon. The classic specialists will get their money’s worth on the 14th stage of the 107th Tour de France. On the last ten kilometers of the 194-kilometer section from Clermont-Ferrand to Lyon, the three smaller climbs La Duchère, Montée de l’Observance and La Croix Rousse await.
