A few hundred fans of the Spiegelau Bats saw an American football thriller against the Landshut Black Knights on Sunday – only in the second overtime did the guests win the opening game of this year’s state league season by 27:21.
At the beginning, the Bayerwald footballers quickly fell behind by 0:14, and they were back just as quickly (13:14). It quickly became apparent that this duel would be an exciting affair, because the defenses of both sides convinced with discipline and overview. Lukas Spindler, the Bats’ defense coordinator, couldn’t prevent the Landshut team from extending their lead to 21:13. In the last quarter, shortly before the end of the game, it was up to the offense under the leadership of head coach Andreas Scholler to at least get a draw and thus force the game into overtime. It worked: Suddenly the moves worked and the special teams under coach Tom Durkovic got the decisive yards. A touchdown and a two-point conversion made the overtime perfect. By then, many fans could no longer stay in their seats. However, the hosts now had to do without their quarterback because Simon Pleintinger was unable to continue playing due to a serious wrist injury. The season should already be over for Pleintinger. A player from the guests was also hit hard, the game had to be interrupted after a “normal” collision for 45 minutes so that the “Knights” player could be given first aid by the emergency doctor and paramedics and transported away. When asked by PNP, Knights department head Igor Cernavski reports that the player is doing better and has now been released from the hospital. In the second overtime, the Landshuters snatched victory.
In addition to the playful highlights, the Bats again offered everything your heart desires. Fireworks led the players to the coin toss and in the half-time break the flag football team, the Young Bats, convinced with their skills and demonstrated the “disembodied” variant of this wonderful sport to the enthusiastic fans. “You can tell how excited the fans were at this event, it’s worth going to Spiegelau for the atmosphere alone,” said an enthusiastic spectator with his family from the Pfarrkirchen area.
