DARMSTADT – Three Rhönrander from Grün-Weiß Darmstadt have qualified for the World Championships. Lilia Lessel, Bero Schröter and Emma Gerlitz secured their tickets for the World Cup in Denmark in May in Leverkusen.
Lilia Lessel also provided the sporting highlight of the third qualifying competition. The former world champion and reigning German champion competed strongly, received the highest scores in spiral (11.65 points) and straight line (10.80) and left the competition far behind. With a successful jump (8.10 points), she also confidently won the overall ranking of the third competition relevant to the World Championship nomination after the German championship and first qualification.
“For me, this competition and the leap into the German team were very special this time, because for the first time since my serious knee injury it was about qualifying for a World Cup,” said Lilia Lessel, who has won World Cup gold several times herself Has.
Emma Gerlitz also started as the reigning German Champion. Despite a strong straight freestyle (10.80 points), she remained below her potential in the junior class. With third place, she also managed to start at the World Championships, as did Bero Schröter in the male junior class. The green-white gymnast missed the first qualification due to illness and now made it into the World Championship team in second place with 19.15 points.
“By the time of the World Cup, we want to work on the finer points in particular, so that in the best-case scenario we can improve our performance again,” explains Lilia Lessel for the time leading up to the start in Denmark.
