Three people were seriously injured in today’s knife attack on a German high-speed train, the Red Cross said, quoted by DPA.

The attack took place in the morning on the fast intercity train between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Police said the only suspect in the attack had been detained and was no longer a threat to the public.

The Bavarian Red Cross said it had given first aid on the spot to three seriously injured people and then transported them to a hospital. According to security sources, the wounded were three men aged 26, 39 and 60.

Authorities have not yet provided details about the circumstances surrounding the attack and the origin of the attacker. According to security forces, the suspect is a 27-year-old Syrian.

The newspaper “Bild” reported that it is believed that the detainee suffers from mental problems and called for help on the train.

The signal for the attack was received by the police at 9:20 local time and law enforcement officers went to the scene. A spokesman for the federal police said this morning that the train was currently stopped in the town of Soibersdorf in the Bavarian region of Upper Palatinate.

A spokesman for the German railway operator Deutsche Ban said traffic on the Regensburg-Nuremberg railway had been suspended from around 09:00 local time. Deutsche Ban announced on Twitter that it is currently impossible to predict when trains will resume on the line, adding that “there will be delays.”

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer expressed his horror and called for calm. “The brutal knife attack on the fast intercity train is terrible,” he was quoted as saying by a ministry spokesman on Twitter. Seehofer said he hoped the wounded and those who witnessed the attack would recover quickly and completely. He also thanked police and train staff “for their courageous actions”.
