NEW YORK – With three weeks to go until the New York City mayoral race, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is trying to make some noise and prove the skeptics wrong, while also targeting his opponent.
“Don’t look down on me, don’t say I don’t have a chance. I’ve been David versus Goliath all my life,” he said Tuesday in Upper Manhattan. The underdog in the mayoral race insists he has the right recipe for winning, despite an overwhelming record lead for Democrats in the city.
Sliwa, a day after marching in the Italian-American Heritage Parade (which Eric Adams did not participate in), criticized the Democratic nominee for taking vacations and going to parties in recent weeks.
“He’s in nightclubs at night, he’s being drunk and dined in the Hamptons,” Sliwa said.
Meanwhile, Adams was in a Brownsville community garden in the afternoon. Adams, a vegan man, is committed to making healthy foods more available if he is elected mayor.
“Our kids grow up believing that ketchup is a vegetable. We need to change this mindset,” Adams said.
He also downplayed the notion that he is not preparing or executing his campaign.
“We have two debates, that’s what the process calls for,” Adams said.
The first of those two debates will take place one week from Wednesday night, and will air on our sister network. News 4. That’s when Adams said that he will respond to Sliwa’s attacks.
“What I’m not going to do is participate in the antics. These are serious times,” Adams said.
Despite that, the two traded criticism regarding gun violence and who is best equipped to solve it.
“Eric Adams, what a shame to talk about having to carry a gun,” Sliwa said, referring to Adams’ comments made earlier in the year.
“He likes antics. ‘Oh, Eric, you’re carrying a gun.’ No. Curtis, you need to focus on people who carry a gun illegally,” Adams replied.
Early voting begins on October 23, before Election Day on November 2. For his part, Sliwa projects confidence in his ability to win, even if many see his path as too narrow.
“I’m telling you, we’re going to surprise the world,” Sliwa said.
