Tragedy Strikes: Three University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving Team Members Killed in Car Crash

In a devastating turn of events, three members of the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash. The incident occurred on U.S. Highway 287, approximately 10 miles south of the Wyoming-Colorado border, on Thursday afternoon. While the university has not released the names of the victims, it has been confirmed that two other members of the men’s swimming and diving team were injured but are expected to survive.

The crash took place between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado, at the intersection of Highway 287 and Red Mountain Road, as reported by the Colorado State Patrol. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic accident. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver may have swerved, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and roll multiple times.

University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel expressed his profound grief over the heartbreaking incident, stating, “We are heartsick at the news of this terrible tragedy for our university, our state, our student-athlete community, and, most importantly, the families and friends of these young people. Words are insufficient to express our sadness.” The university has decided not to disclose the identities of the victims until their next of kin have been notified.

University of Wyoming Director of Athletics Tom Burman also conveyed his condolences, acknowledging the immense loss suffered by the swimming and diving team. “My thoughts and prayers are with our swimming and diving student-athletes, coaches, families, and friends,” Burman said. “It is difficult to lose members of our University of Wyoming family, and we mourn the loss of these student-athletes. We have counseling services available to our student-athletes and coaches in our time of need.”

As the investigation into the accident continues, authorities are expected to release more information in due course. The University of Wyoming community, as well as the wider sports fraternity, remains in shock and mourning. The loss of these young athletes has left a void that will be felt for years to come.
