Three tourists injured by Icelandic volcanic eruption | Abroad

Three tourists were injured in the eruption of a volcano in Iceland on Wednesday evening. A spokesman for the local authorities told The New York Times. Although the injuries are minor, including a broken ankle, authorities would like to emphasize that a visit to the volcanically active area is not without risk.

Spokesperson Hjordis Gudmundsdottir asks tourists in the interview with the American newspaper to be careful. “We know it’s spectacular but we ask people to prepare well before visiting the volcano,” Gudmundsdottir said. A hike to the volcano on the southwestern peninsula of Reykjanes, about 40 kilometers outside the capital Reykjavik, takes about five hours. Hikers may also need to step over flowing lava at Fagradalsfjall Mountain.

“We are not closing the area but are advising people not to visit the volcano,” Gudmundsdottir told The New York Times. “It’s not just a walk in the park,” emphasizes the spokesperson, who expects tourists especially in the night hours because of the special natural phenomenon.

Few consequences

According to the Icelandic authorities, the volcanic eruption has little effect on populated areas and important infrastructure. The national airline Icelandair informed travelers in an original way that planes are not affected by the eruption. In a Facebook post, Icelandair wrote that “Icelandic summer just got even warmer”, with a link to a live stream of the eruption.

Shares of the airline and tourism company Fly Play have already gone up.
