Three suspected Islamic State members arrested in Finland

Madrid., Finnish security forces arrested three suspects of belonging to the Islamic State terrorist group on Tuesday and, when the news broke, they were brought before a court on Monday. None of the three are Finnish.

The Helsinki District Court has issued a prison order against the three suspects, who are accused of belonging to a terrorist organisation, Finnish public television YLE reports. The court has given prosecutors until January to file charges.

The three are believed to be around 30 years old and were arrested for crimes that occurred in the city of Helsinki, although there is currently no evidence that they were planning an attack in the country.

A detective from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Mikko Salminen, confirmed to YLE that the suspects were arrested following an operation in which the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (SUPO) was also involved.

“We suspect that the case is related to the involvement of an international radical Islamist group. We suspect that it is related to the activities of the Islamic State,” Salminen said. None of the three are Finnish citizens, although they do have a residence permit in the Scandinavian country.

“The investigation has not revealed any evidence that there was a risk of a terrorist attack against Finland,” the detective added.

Sources cited by YLE revealed that the crimes occurred in Helsinki between January 2023 and June 2024.
