A ministerial delegation has left for the Netherlands from Suriname. Ministers Albert Ramdien of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (BIBIS), Armand Achaibersing of Finance and Planning and Albert Jubithana of Transport Communication and Tourism (TCT) left for a two-day working visit on Saturday 26 June 2021.
During this working visit, the ministers will hold talks with government authorities, ministers and other senior officials in the Netherlands about the cooperation between the two countries and also about a number of current issues internationally, including the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and support from the Netherlands. thereby.
With regard to tourism development, Minister Jubithana will enter into a dialogue with various organizations and with his colleague Minister of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. It will be examined what still needs to be improved in passenger traffic between Suriname and the Netherlands. There are also discussions on the agenda with the management of KLM regarding cooperation on the Paramaribo-Amsterdam return route. During these discussions, together with the KLM management, it will be examined how the Surinamese Aviation Company (SLM) can be supported. The negotiations should result in not only keeping SLM, but also making it a profitable and profitable company.
Minister Achaibersing and colleague Ramdien will exchange views with the minister and expert authorities of the Ministry of Finance in the Netherlands. These discussions mainly concern the IMF and the more structural cooperation in the field of support for the Tax and Customs Administration and Customs. Naturally, there will also be talks with officials from the international consultancy Lazard, who will travel to The Hague to have strategic discussions about the course and follow-up of the talks with international creditors. In addition, it will be examined at both a bilateral and commercial level how everything fits into the government’s 2020-2022 Recovery Program that was approved by the parliament of Suriname on Friday. The relationship between the recovery program and the program to be completed with the IMF is also being studied.
It is a short visit to the Netherlands that is necessary for the Surinamese government to dot the i’s and cross the t’s and to further intensify the cooperation that there is now with the Netherlands. The delegation will return to Suriname on Wednesday.
