Three skiers have been killed in an avalanche in Austria. Two people were also injured.
The accident happened on the Lackenspitze near Tweng in the Salzburger Lungau at an altitude of about 2400 meters, the police reported. There, a slab of snow came loose, 200 meters wide and 600 meters long.
The three fatalities were buried under snow. After an hours-long rescue operation, two of them were found dead. The third was resuscitated and taken to hospital, but died there.
The two injured were not covered by the snow. All the victims were part of a group of 11 Austrians under the age of 30 who were skiing.
