It’s always frustrating when we get an itch that we can’t scratch, especially if it’s in a place we can’t reach. Like the inside of your buttocks, for example.
We’ve all been there, but most of the time it just means going back to the toilet and cleaning yourself properly. Remember, water is your friend in this situation.
But sometimes even that doesn’t solve the problem, indicating that your itchy butt could be a sign of something more sinister, like Dr. Christal Blanchard on TikTok explained.
In her one-minute video, Dr. Blanchard narrowed down the root causes of an itchy bottom to three potential problems. Remember to always see your doctor if you are concerned about recurring symptoms.

After urging those who suffer from itchy buttocks to see their primary care physician to determine the source of the problem, Dr. Blanchard that a vitamin A deficiency could be behind it.
She said: “You can really check that through your doctor, who will do a blood test that can show a deficiency. If you are going to take vitamin A, talk to your doctor as your liver enzymes need to be monitored.”
She warned, “Vitamin A can be very hard on your liver if taken for too long and too high.”
2. Low stomach acid
dr. Blanchard went on to explain that low stomach acid can also be the cause of an itchy bottom, adding that there are certain tests you can do at home to check if this is the case.
One test is the baking soda challenge in the morning before you have anything for breakfast. This requires drinking a quarter teaspoon of baking soda mixed in 120 ml of water and timing how long it takes to burp, the norm being less than 2-3 minutes.
If low stomach acid is the cause of your itchy butt, Dr. Blanchard recommends trying apple cider vinegar to see if your symptoms improve. She said, “If you take apple cider vinegar, do it 15 minutes before a meal and dilute it in some water.”
3. Parasite:
The third possible cause of your itchy butt, suggested Dr. Blanchard, could be a parasite. She said, “If you have an itchy butt at night or feel restless at night, the cause of your itchy butt may be a parasite.”
A parasite, also known as intestinal worms, can cause diarrhea, constipation, gas, bloating, nausea and sudden weight loss due to poor absorption of nutrients.
Tiny white worms in your poop that look like bits of thread are also a sign you have a parasite, according to the NHS. A primary care physician should prescribe medication to get rid of your worms, and others around you may also need treatment.
