In Japan, 77% of respondents believe that it will not be possible to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, according to the Japan News Network. Only 17% of respondents had the opposite opinion.
The Tokyo Olympics were originally scheduled for 2020, but were postponed in March a year later due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization of the Olympic Games after the postponement is a very difficult task, and it is not known whether the pandemic will subside in 2021. In Japan, morbidity rates were low in June, but later tripled.
The respondents did not provide any further explanation as to what considerations led the participants to provide one or the other answer.
The organizers of the Olympic Games have previously stated that the sports forum in Tokyo will be held in a simplified format in order to save money. However, the organizers denied the assumption that the Olympic Games will not be possible without the vaccine against the new coronavirus.
In a poll conducted by Kyodo News and television channel Tokyo MX in June, more than half of Tokyo residents said they did not want the Olympics to take place in the Japanese capital in 2021.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and local organizers have repeatedly stated that it is not possible to postpone the Tokyo Games again.
