The news agency AFP writes that several major media in the country refer to unnamed sources in the country’s Ministry of Justice.
AFP has tried to get the executions confirmed by the ministry, but has not succeeded. The executions will be the first under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was sworn in in October.
Japan, where more than 100 death row inmates are awaiting execution, is one of the few rich countries still carrying out executions. Three inmates were executed in 2019. The year before, the number was 15, of which 13 were from a cult that was behind a deadly attack with sarin gas on the subway in Tokyo.
The inmates are always hanged, usually long after the sentencing. For decades, the death row inmates have been notified only hours before the execution. There is great support for the death penalty in the country, despite international criticism, including from human rights organizations.
