Newsis People Power Innovation Committee Chairman In Yo-han visited the National May 18th Democracy Cemetery in Buk-gu, Gwangju on the 30th and emphasized that the May 18th Democratization Movement made a great contribution to the development of democracy in the Republic of Korea. Chairman In said, “The Gwangju Democratization Movement was a great achievement in developing democracy,” and “To borrow a saying from the Jews, ‘Let us forgive, but do not forget.’” Chairman In, who visited the Gwangju National May 18th Democracy Cemetery with all 12 members of the Innovation Committee, knelt down and paid respects to the victims’ graves.

Chairman In, who arrived at the May 18th Democracy Cemetery around 8:50 on this day, wrote in the guestbook, ‘Gwangju is completing the democracy of the Republic of Korea!’ Chairman In, who was writing a memorial message while looking at his cell phone, copied the phrase incorrectly and rewrote it.

Chairman In, wearing a black suit and tie and white gloves, laid flowers and burned incense at the memorial tower on behalf of the Innovation Committee. Afterwards, he visited the graves of the missing people, laid flowers, and knelt down on one knee to pray in silence. While visiting the shrine, Chairman In said, “I hope there will never be a sacrifice like this again in this land,” and “Other than that, I am at a loss for words, so it is difficult to say anything.”

After the visit was over, the three May 18 organizations (Bereaved Families Association, Injured Persons Association, and Meritorious Persons Association) visited Chairman In and delivered a proposal requesting the inclusion of the full constitution of the May 18 Democratization Movement and the revision of the National Meritorious Persons Act. Chairman In responded, “I will do my best to deliver and implement it.”

After receiving the proposal, Chairman In met with reporters and said, “I’m not good at writing and I was speechless in front of the cemetery,” and added, “I really want to express it, but I can’t express it, so I’m sorry.”

At the same time, Chairman In emphasized that the bereaved families of the May 18 Democratization Movement must be well taken care of. Chairman In said, “From now on, we have done well in the local area by actively taking care of the victims’ families in Gwangju and the descendants of those who passed away, but now the central government will embrace them all and go anywhere to proudly show off their ancestors and their mothers and fathers.” “We need to become a country where people can talk,” he explained.

Kim Kyung-jin, spokesperson for the Innovation Committee, met with reporters after Chairman In left and said, “I hope that the first official schedule for everyone to attend the first meeting of the Innovation Committee will be the Gwangju May 18 Cemetery for the sake of East-West harmony and national integration of the Republic of Korea.” “It was decided,” he said, adding, “So the first schedule was a group visit to the May 18 Cemetery.”

Spokesperson Kim pointed out that East-West harmony between Britain and Honam leads to national unity. Spokesperson Kim said, “In the end, there is meaning in national integration, national integration, and East-West integration, and comforting the pain of Gwangju is the first step to comforting the pain of Korea’s modern history.”
