Three new movies flop

In Germany, too, Kevin Costner’s Western epic fell far short of expectations. But two other films had even worse theatrical releases.

Here in Germany, we had to wait longer than the US audience for two new films, but that may have been a disadvantage for the titles. On the other side of the Atlantic, they were already disappointing at the box office, which may have prevented some potential ticket sales here.

Firstly, there is “Horizon”, the first part of Kevin Costner’s planned western series, which is to include four films. The former “Yellowstone” star invested several million US dollars of his own fortune in the epic, but the bet did not really pay off at the start. In the USA, “Horizon” has so far only made 29 million US dollars (via Box Office Mojo) and the first weekend in German cinemas suggests that not many people are interested in the work here either: just 58,000 tickets were sold, which corresponds to revenues of 700,000 euros, as Focus:Film reported. The western only reached number 6 in the box office charts; a truly modest result for a new release.

All episodes of the Western hit series “Yellowstone” and the spin-offs are available here on Paramount+

We met Kevin Costner for an interview for “Horizon”, where he told us, among other things, why he doesn’t like many westerns:

“Borderlands” also flops in Germany – “The Crow” in the USA

However, “Borderlands” is currently proving that things can still get a little worse. The film adaptation of the extremely popular video game series of the same name also met with little enthusiasm in the USA: it has so far managed to earn a measly 15 million US dollars on the domestic market (via Box Office Mojo). The trend continues here, where the adaptation landed at just 8th place in the cinema charts, even though it was its first weekend. Only 38,000 viewers gave “Borderlands” a chance, which corresponds to sales of 400,000 euros.

The fact that a film flops first in the USA and then here is likely to be repeated with another work: “The Crow”. The remake of the cult work was rejected early on by fans of the original and the reviews also suggest that the remake is only partially convincing in terms of quality; 19% approval is currently given by Rotten TomatoesIn the USA, “The Crow”, in which “IT” star Bill Skarsgård took on the lead role, was released last week and the first box office results indicate an even bigger flop than “Borderlands”: The remake grossed just 4.6 million US dollars on its opening weekend, placing it at number 8 in the charts. In Germany, “The Crow” will be released on September 12, 2024. If the current trend repeats itself, the work will also have a modest release here.

The current film year has of course already produced some hits. But can you recognise this year’s titles from just one picture? Find out:
