ISLAMABAD > Three more polio cases reported in Pakistan. New cases were reported in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. With this, the number of confirmed cases in the country increased to 55 this year.
The diagnosis was made by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institutes of Health. A case of wild poliovirus type 1 was reported. The disease was confirmed in two eight-year-old girls and a five-month-old boy.
New cases were reported from Dera Ismail Khan, Sob and Jaffarabad districts. Cases of polio have been reported in these areas before. In the last three years, there were obstacles in the effective organization of vaccination programs in the area.
The new cases came days after a delegation of the Global Polio Eradication Campaign met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Of the 55 cases reported so far, 26 are from Balochistan. 14 cases were confirmed from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 13 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
