Three more corona infections at Brabant mink farms

The coronavirus has been diagnosed at another three mink farms in the Netherlands, ministers De Jonge and Schouten write in a letter to the House of Representatives. Ministers are expected to announce new measures for mink breeders on Wednesday.

The infestations were revealed through mandatory screening, which is performed on all mink farms. Minks may also be contaminated at a company in the municipality of Venray, further research has yet to reveal this.

Since the end of April, infected minks have been found at six mink farms with eight locations. These are companies in the Brabant municipalities of Gemert-Bakel, Laarbeek, Deurne, Sint Anthonis.

Measures

Ministers want to find out how big the risk is that the coronavirus will continue to roam on mink farms and thus cause transmission from animal to human. The Outbreak Management Team-Zoonoses has been asked to issue an advice on this and to include the last three infections. Ministers are expected to take new measures on this basis.

Mink companies are now not allowed to transport mink or manure. RIVM assumes that people who stay outside the house run a negligible risk of getting the coronavirus from the mink.
